CBN01 WOODEN VASE SCULPTURE by Thomas Roger

CABANE collection.

Set of containers, empty spaces in various formats, which can accommodate objects, souvenirs, secrets, thoughts. From manufactured boards, I try to find the original shapes of the material: the wood is split with chisels, to obtain irregular slings (where the cuts follow the edge of the wood). The pieces are assembled intuitively, there are no preparatory drawings or previously designed plans, this step must be spontaneous, and the shapes must be drawn by the material. The assembly step activates the wood, the different surfaces become a single volume.

The wooden edges are then bent and smoothed. Raw notches and cutouts become soft shapes. The volume thus seems to become a natural, uncontrolled, free object again. The wood used is found in local resource centres and carpentry, in the form of scraps, wooden boards of various dimensions and species. The assembly and woodworking is done by hand, in the workshop based in Mulhouse, Alsace.
